EV Secrets – How To Build An Electric Car

One of simplest and most functional forms of transportation is the electric cars. The operating mechanism of this kind of car is so simple that they just run on a number of batteries, which are arranged in series with an on/off switch button. The electric motor is responsible for giving life to the car. Aside from its engine features, electric-powered cars are far more economical than other cars using just the conventional fuel. How to build an electric car is easy. Because of its simple engineering engine design, almost everybody can build it given the limited resources. A car frame, the usual wheels, a common car battery, mainstay electric motor, and on/off switch are just the basic parts of an electric car.

Before building your electric car, you must first choose the right car to convert.  Small cars are the best vehicles for you to convert because the major problem that many people face in this step is the large space required for the batteries. Cars that are light weight and have plenty of room for batteries will be perfect for conversion.

After choosing the right donor car, you need to know which tools to use and where to find them. Also, you need to have a decent step-by-step instruction to work your way towards your own electric car. Essentially, you have to remove the donor car’s engine gas tank, exhaust, and clutch. Then, you have to install the electric motor and controller, and wire them to the batteries.

Advantages of building your own EV include reducing your maintenance costs, saving hundreds of dollars every month, preventing the emission of gas and toxic fumes to reduce global warming, getting a better engine’s performance, and driving up to 150-200 miles on a single charge.

Indeed, it is quite feasible to know how to build an electric car. Converting your car to run on electricity is a great way to save money on gas and protect the environment at the same time.

Hey! Where Is My Electric Car?

Man invents 100 mpg carburetor! Disapperats down black hole!

Electric Cars Work! There just aren’t any.

Big automakers are looking out for your future!

Which of the above statements is false? Are any of them false? Well maybe number one is false. For years there have been stories of inventors that came up with a carbuerator that would get 100 miles per gallon but the thing never came to market. I know number three is false because look at our problem, air pollution. Look at our choices for transportation, a bunch of big gas guzzling cars and trucks.

Well, number two statement is true, mostly. In the 1990′s the State of California mandated a small percentage of vehicles sold in the state must release no emissions into the air. Some of the vehicles were leased and some were sold outright. GM had the EV1 which were leased. They canceled the leases and took the cars and crushed them. Perfectly good cars were destroyed.

There was a Ford EV Ranger pickup truck. Most of these were leased vehicles and Ford took most of them back but, I guess some of them are still around and there is a web site for EV Ranger drivers. Also, Toyota made a RAV4 EV which was discontinued in 2003. There are still some of these around and some websites about driving them. And there was a Honda EV car. All of these cars ran on electricity alone. Their range in miles varied but they were more than adequate for commuting, running errands, or just getting about on a daily basis.

I have never seen one of these vehicles. From my reading online about them it seems like they drove and performed about like any other gas powered car. Sure you had to plug them in, but, you have to put gas in a regular car also. What’s the big deal? GM has made lots of claims about why an electric car is not feasible. Since they produced a very capable electric car in the 1990′s and then destroyed them all you would think they know what they are talking about. Now they say they are going to produce an all electric car called the Volt. Well, probably someone else will do it before they do.

It is rumored that Big Oil destroyed the electric car and it was Big Oil that opened the black hole where the 100 mpg carburetor went. It probably is not that simple. But, the electric car threatened lots of entrenched interests. For one thing, the cars required very little in the way of servicing. No oil change, no anti-freeze, no air cleaner, just brakes and tires. So that whole service industry goes out the window with an electric fleet.

In 2006 the ZAP Xebra began importing from China. There is a sedan and a pickup truck. It is a 3 wheeled vehicle that looks like a toy car. In my opinion this is the kind of attempt that will turn the US public off to the whole idea. They do have some interesting features though, like a solar panel on the roof or over the bed of the truck to trickle charge the battery while running. Still, this is not what the American public will spring for in any kind of numbers.

A viable electric car will first of all have to look like a regular car. I would say the range would have to be at least 100 miles before charging. Top speed will have to be at Interstate Highway speeds or probably at least 70 mph. Also, there will have to be reasonable pickup from a dead stop. It seems like we have already had all these features in several of the vehicles listed above but for what ever reason they are no longer available. Contact your local car dealer and complain.

EV Cars? Top Benefits for Children

EV cars has been in the news for sometime now. Yet many are still unsure if it’s worth it converting their gasoline cars to electric. Let’s take a look at it from another point of view; that of our children.

Clean Air

First and foremost benefit for children would be that great outdoor air they can breathe without damaging their health. Automobiles using internal combustion engines (ICEs) burning fossil fuels are the single largest contributor to air pollution on our planet, that’s air pollution due to gasoline-powered cars. To emphasize on this fact let me quote:

“Components of air pollution include:

Carbon Monoxide (CO) – reduces the blood’s ability to carry oxygen, aggravates lung and heart disease, and causes headaches, fatigue, and dizziness.

Sulfur Dioxides (SOx) – when combined with water vapor in the air become the major contributor to acid rain.

Nitrogen Oxides (NOx) – cause the yellowish-brown haze over dirty cities, and when combined with oxygen becomes a poisonous gas that can damage lung tissue.

Hydrocarbons (HC) are a group of pollutants that react to form ozone (O3), some HCs cause cancer and others can irritate mucous membranes.

Ozone (O3) is the white haze or smog seen over many cities. Ozone can irritate the respiratory system, decrease lung function, and aggravate chronic lung diseases (such as asthma).

Carbon Dioxide (CO2), although naturally occurring, can cause problems. In large quantities it allows more sunlight to enter the atmosphere than can escape – trapping excess heat that can lead to the “greenhouse effect” and cause global warming.

Ozone is a toxic gas, but it’s not emitted directly from tailpipes. Ground-level ozone is formed by a chemical reaction between VOCs (volatile organic compounds) and NOx, released from fuel combustion, in the presence of sunlight. Ground-level ozone concentrations can reach unhealthful levels when the weather is hot and sunny with little or no wind. Gasoline and diesel powered cars, trucks, and buses are the major sources of NOx and VOCs.

According to the American Lung Association, ozone is a serious threat to public health. Exposure to high levels of ozone causes significantly higher rates of asthma in children. In pregnant women, it can cause a significantly higher rate of babies with birth defects.

According to the California Air Resources Board (CARB), even when taking into account power plant emissions, EVs are 90% cleaner than the newest (model year 2005) and cleanest conventional gasoline-powered car vehicles.

Drinkable Water

Non-toxic water. The use of petroleum products (including processing, storage, transport and disposal) is the single largest source of water and groundwater pollution in the world. Just take a look at the tons of oils spilled into our great oceans.

 Non-toxic foods
It’s a known fact that landfills pollute the soil. And what’s not commonly known is that car parts are a significant contributor to our landfills. These include disposable parts such as oil filters, air filters, spark plugs, exhaust systems, belts, hoses, distributor caps, etc. And these are all parts consumed by the internal combustion engine. EV cars have no such engines and are therefore non-contributors to land pollution. What about their batteries going to the landfill? Guess what, these batteries never go to landfills. They were recovered and re-used in the production of new batteries*. Now that’s soil for us capable of growing non-toxic fruits and vegetables for our children.

(*The Battery Council International report 1996)

 Fairer Weather

Now we are all aware of the so-called “greenhouse effect”. As mentioned above this is caused by elevated quantities of Carbon Dioxide (CO2) in the atmosphere. We are also aware that these CO2  came from car engine exhausts. This produces thermal pollution which in turn disrupts our stable weather patterns and causes global climate change. Waste heat from internal combustion engines is a significant source of thermal pollution. Imagine what it would be like if these ICEs were permanently eradicated. Global climate change worries will be no more assuring us of  a brighter future for our children.

 Quiet

Without the engine noise, the loudest part of the car is the tire tread on the road at lower speeds, and the wind noise at higher speeds. The National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) reports that some 30 million are exposed to daily noise levels that will eventually reduce their ability to hear. One in eight children between the ages of 6 and 19 already have some degree of hearing loss, and adults who are going deaf are doing so earlier and earlier.

 Safety

With proper safety features, such as circuit breakers and fusible links, explosion, fire, and electric shock will be unlikely. Unlike a gas car’s battery, the EV’s battery pack does not use the chassis as a ground. This means that, in an accident, sheet metal protruding into the circuit will not suddenly make the chassis “live”.

All of these facts have been borne out by actual crashes of EVs on the road and on race tracks, as well as in formal crash test conditions.

Facts of Electric cars – A must read

Truth About Electric Vehicles
Japan has been researching  EV (electric vehicle) technology since last 20 Years but it is fact that Electric vehicle was invented before the gasoline engine vehicle.  Electric vehicle did not really gain popularity because of weak batteries and recharge system. Now the scientists have found minerals like Lithium which can really move this technology to make a larger impact on the consumers. As evryone of us know that there are 3-types of vehicles running on our roads.
Petrol/Diesel VehiclesHybrid Vehicles that are partially electric. &EV-Electric Vehicles
Many new developers and enterprises are taking bold interest in the production of Electric vehicles, but still the big stake is with the main key players like GM, Honda, Toyota and Nissan. This monopoly will raise the prices because of the long time research and the expensive batteries. Mitsubishi IMIEV has a price tag of Japanese Yen (JPY)  3,980,000. Under Government of Japan’s support and zero emmission promotion program a rebate of JPY 1,140,000 is available to the end-users. This makes a final price tag of JPY : 2,840,000The 500Cycle motor that moves the car is in back, and the battery -LEV50 x 88 are the main components of IMIEV. It will charge to full in 14Hrs. from a house plug in of AC100V. But since a great time of about 14 hours is still un-acceptable to many. Therefore every maker is focusing in providing a quick battery charge solution to the users. Even the Govt. has announced to provide support is establishing more than 2,000 quick charge points by the year 2020. These points will be useful and the user can re-charge about 80% of the batteries in only 30mins. but still this will be a question because a tank fill up from gas station does not take more than 2 minutes.Besides this if the user drives the car with full beam and full airconditioning positions then the battery wont last even half the distance in full charge. hence the drivers should keep in mind that IMIEV will only run for 80Kms. if airconditioning and lights are used continuously. But this is how the normal cars do and the alternator in the vehicles keep on charging the battery.Nissan Leaf another EV has set a total retail price of JPY 3760000 and after a Govt. discount of JPY770,000 the final price will become JPY2,990,000. Well as we discussed above that until the batteries are not loosening prices these small babies will be expensive. hence if you do own the vehicle for 7-years then it might become economical in comparison with present gasoline engines. We beleive that there are no instant worries about gasoline engines vanishing from this planet, they have been here for the last 100years or more and will remain around us in future.

Figure 4.  Carbon Dioxide Emissions From Energy Use

Note: Electric power sector emissions are distributed to the end-use sectors.

Carbon dioxide emitted by the industrial sector fell by 8 percent from 1980 to 2007. By 1999, transportation sector carbon dioxide emissions exceeded industrial sector emissions. Of the major sectors, the commercial sector generated the least carbon dioxide, but recorded the largest growth (67 percent) since 1980.

Figure 5.  Greenhouse Gas Emissions, Based on Global Warming Potential

1 Methane, nitrous oxide, hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs), perfluorocarbons (PFCs), and sulfur hexafluoride (SF6).

The combustion of fossil fuels—coal, petroleum, and natural gas—to release their energy creates emissions of carbon dioxide, the most significant greenhouse gas. Total carbon dioxide emissions stood at 6 billion metric tons of gas in 2007, 20 percent higher than the 1990 level.
