Car Alarms Offer Safety and Security

Sydney was once regarded as the car theft capital of Australia. This is not surprising since Sydney is the home to the largest and oldest fleet of cars in the country. This alarming scenario brought to the fore the importance of installing car alarm systems to help deter car thieves. A car alarm is basically an electronic device or sensors installed in a vehicle in order to prevent theft of the vehicle itself, its contents, or both.

Car alarms operate by emitting high-volume sound, usually the car’s horn, klaxon or a pre-recorded warning, once it is triggered by a number of things such as vibrations; opening the door, hood or boot; or opening of special switches on the door contacts. The alarm may be accompanied by the flashing of the car’s lights or notifying the owner through a paging system and disrupting various electrical circuits needed for the car to start.

There are two categories of car alarms: OEM or those built-in to the car at the factory and the aftermarket alarms which can be installed after the car has rolled out of the assembly line. OEM alarms are usually activated and deactivated with the car’s keyless entry remote. The same goes for aftermarket alarm systems which are typically armed and disarmed through remote control.

Over the past couple of years, car alarm systems have evolved far beyond their original purpose. The race for the creation of alarm systems that are both fail proof and able to set off some type of reactive response has resulted into a gush of technological breakthroughs which transformed car alarm systems and brought the field into a whole new level. One of the most notable additions to car alarm systems is the introduction of GPS enabled devices. These allow the car to be easily tracked once it is stolen. A more recent variation allows the unsuspecting thief to run away with the car, but after cruising for few miles the car suddenly comes to a screeching stop, then a smoke screen activates and the siren starts ringing like crazy. All these are taking place as the car is tracked through GPS.

Of course there are other innovative features that come with a wide range of car alarm systems available in the market today. Some of the more popular features include electronic immobilizers that are designed to disconnect all power from the starter to prevent ignition bypass; air-horns which call more attention and inflict pain to the thief if he enters the car; microwave detectors that activate when an object enters the sensors’ zone of protection; LEDs or small light emitting devices in the interior of the car to warn thieves of the alarm’s presence; and strobes or devices that emit intense light to further call attention to a car when the alarm is triggered.

There are several other car alarm accessories to choose from and the emergence of these highly sophisticated car alarm systems is definitely the reason why the rate of car theft in Sydney is currently at its record low. So take a proactive step and consider having a car alarm installed in your ride. Electric Cars, What Are They Up To?

The all-electric sportscar that caught the world’s attention last year is about to do it again this year as UK auto magazine CAR has published spy shots of the Tesla roadster undergoing on road testing near Lotus Headquarters in England.


CAR reports that what will be the world’s first electric sportscar will boast Porsche 911-style performance times; 0-60 mph in a scant 4.0 seconds and be based on the Lotus Elise’s chassis. Further, Lotus will be the manufacturer. The GBP 41,000 (,000) sports cars are set to sell this autumn.


Another one is that Car & Driver has road test of the new Honda Civic Hybrid over on their website. They also point out that while the Toyota Prius can take off from a stop using only an electric motor, the Civic Hybrid can’t. It is a bit odd, considering that the car is going for the ultimate gas mileage. The Honda Civic has a weak 20 hp electric motor while the Toyota Prius has a much more powerful 67 hp electric motor.


The dashboard of the Toyota looks pretty cool from the images I see on Car & Driver, it looks very futuristic. The EPA quotes the Toyota Hybrid gets 49 miles per gallon in city driving, and 51 miles per gallon on the highway. However it is hard achieve those numbers according to Car & Driver. Basically, if you put your foot in the throttle at all you’re going not getting anywhere near those mileage figures. I’m not sure that even hybrid buyers want to be left behind by grandma the stoplight.


Also, I am not sure that the Smart car is the answer to our urban woes like Bob delicately claimed in his post, not when they’re predicting a list price over ,000. I do think that the Global Electric Motorcar, the GEM Car, is the answer, however. Base price for the GEM Car is ,995 and it runs on batteries. And there’s a 10% federal tax credit on the purchase price of a GEM Car, at least until the end of this year.


Oh, it’s not perfect, not unless you live in a very mild climate, anyway. Sorry, Bob. You’ll probably want to add the heater/defroster (5), the hard doors (,595), the gel batteries (5) and the windshield washer kit (), so your GEM Car will run you closer to ,000. GEM is a wholly owned subsidiary of DaimlerChrysler, by the way – don’t they own Smart Car, too?

Question by Interactively Eco-Friendly: I need some help with these electric vehicles. Please read?
Ok, so I am a thirteen year old environmentalist and i have my goal set in life. To create a vehicle for everyone that runs on electricity. I love electric cars and i have drove one before. There quiet and slick. I have plans for one already and I am an eighth grader whiz. I am very interested in this field but i need some information. I would like to start actually building a car either in the summer, or a year or two from now. But before i get into that i am going to ask about school.

School:

should i take Earth Science or Biology? What subject would prepare me better for all of this.
i am in algebra one and take geometry next year
i have wood chop next marking period and we build an air car (tiny compressed air though)
Should i go to a new jersey vocational school in the future?
what should i Base my classes and electives around?
any good colleges after high school (thinking ahead)

I also would like some incite on your experiences with electric cars, any thing is good.

first, am i to young to start this journey?
is this a good thing to do and am i going to enjoy it?

material: titanium body and plastic roof
titanium is stronger than steal but lighter than aluminum
plastic roof will be explained faster
(is titanium too expensive? an alternatives?)
Speed: 40mph
(just for now but eventually i would progress)
windows :P lexiglas
(light and durable, super strong kind)
range: 20-30miles
(more is great but its a start)

mirrors, windshield wipers, up and down windows, fits at least two people, doors, small front that doesn’t extend out like i.c.e. cars, just simple for now but it will progress as i get older and more intelligent. and we need a radio

parts being used:

building a motor and system is a lot of work, time, and money. So i figured that i could buy a commercial one.
wheels, not too heavy but not too ugly
solar cells on top of the car that feed electricity to the batteries, evergreen
batteries? any idea what is readily available and cheap?
budget? what should my budget be?
motor and axel? and ideas?

this needs a lot more work as you can see, but i am determined to create a street legal electric car. I was looking around for solar ev’s and came across this one. should i buy this kit and transform it into what i could see? this comes with most of what i need.

would my idea work or would it way the car down too much adn make it slow and heavy?

the car creates its own energy like the Chevy volt but does not give off pollution.
Using the Faraday effect, i would turn the axle into a generator. The axel would be magnetic or made with magnets and a large spoil of wire would be placed around it. as you drive and the axle spins that spins the magnets, this could potentially charge the batteries.

^^^^^would this work? too heavy? to small? not enough energy?

That is a very long question that has a lot of little questions inside of it. Some may not read it all while others will miss some of the details. You might be advised to break it up into smaller parts that can receive specific attention.

First, you are never “too young” to have an interest in any subject. But the level of your interest may vary with age as will the amount of detail and backround you will be able to contain. But I believe that a good backround knowledge and general skill level is helpful in approaching any subject. You can think of almost any field of study, economics, legal, engineering, fuels, politics… and apply it to electric vehicles. Also what you initially study may not be directly related to your eventual occupation. So at your level I would maintain your core academic subjects while you pursue your interests on the side in every way you can.

Soon you may be inclined toward a more technical perspective vs an academic one. If that were so vocational training may be in your future. If you were more academicly inclined you may find yourself pursuing electrical or mechanical engineering and still be fairly close to the nuts and bolts aspects. But even an accountant may find themselves working for an electrical vehicle operation of one size or another…

With respect to your surplus energy system, a little more physics would allow you to know that this is not currently considered possible. What you are suggesting is a system that would have an efficiency (amount put out over the amount of energy put in) of greater than one. This is also known as over unity or perpetual motion. The concept conflicts with the law of conservation of energy. Instead of adding energy it would take energy from the system and slow the vehicle. A similar idea is commonly known as regenerative braking.

Many of the materials of any vehicle have to be able to withstand a crash test. Some of yours might pose hazzards and therefore problems. Others may not be economical

It is possible that you will come up with something that no one else has thought of or a new way at looking at something that everyone else has ignored but it is unlikely that this will come without a great deal of work to understand what has already been done before. This is your challenge: to keep your enthausism, interest, and fresh perspective while learning from those who have considered such things before.
