This post is a brief overview of how to use an electric car kit to convert your gas car or truck into a fuel saving  electric vehicle.  This overview will outline the basic details.

Electric Car Kit -Step 1 – Select your Vehicle

Generally speaking, the lighter your chosen vehicle, the better.  This enables you to get the best distance per charge and highest speeds, without as much power. So small to medium sized vehicles, are recommended.  In addition a manual transmission, is highly recommended, since it will not require much modification versus an automatic.  Also power steering and air conditioning system can complicate and increase your conversion costs, so if you are on a budget stay away from vehicles with these options.

Electric Car Kit -Step 2 -Remove the Internal Combustion Engine and Components

Next you will need to remove the engine and all the components that are required to run the engine, such as the radiator, cooling fan, fuel tank, exhaust system, etc.

Electric Car Kit -Step 3 – Plan Large Component Details

Once you have removed all of the old unused equipment, you are ready to determine where to mount the batteries, the motor and controller.  This is also a good time to make sure that your vehicle is in pretty good shape and make any repairs or modifications as needed.

Once you prepare for the major components, you are ready to prepare and plan for the smaller items, such as wiring, gauges, connectors, etc.  Be sure to  prepare and plan out all the small details, at this stage.  You will want to make sure you have a plan to make all systems functional.  Especially braking systems, lighting, and other safety systems.  You definitely want to make sure you have a limit switch that the driver can manually shut down the system in an emergency.

General configuration is that the batteries are attached to a controller that is then connected to a motor.   The motor is mounted in the space where the original gas engine was, usually with an adapter plate.

Once you have all the plans and details worked out, and your vehicle prepared, you are ready to begin the installation of your electric car kit to power it.  You want to make sure that you completely understand the plan and, if needed, hire a professional to help with any areas that you are not comfortable completing yourself.

Once your electric car kit is installed and tested, you will want to get a professional safety inspection.  You will also need to check with your local government to make sure that you have built an acceptable vehicle that meets all of the safety requirements by law.
