Question by Tony J: How to make a sliding gate for driveway?
I am trying to make a sliding gate and could do with some pointers.

The gate will be 4m wide x 1m high. I am getting it made from wrought iron by a local blacksmith. But Although I know it needs to be on wheels running in a track, I don’t know where I can buy them from. I am thinking that I need about 8-9m of RSJ buried in the ground where the gate will slide along with a metal dowel welded to it, then the gate should have wheels which run on the dowel. But I have no idea if this is the best method or even the correct way of doing it. On top of this query, once the gate is sitting on its track or similar, how do you support the top so it stands upright?

Ultimately once the gate is working I plan to add an electric gate kit so it can be opened from the car – so all in all it is quite a big DIY project…

So any advice or weblinks or advice greatly received – especially in respect to where I can get these from.

Thanks

A metal shop should have a roller that helps support the gate at the top to hold it upright, and make sure it opens right. It is U shaped and fits over the top of the gate. You could also use a caster and U channel steel. anything to keep it straight.
