Electric Car Conversion

Yessir – the car now has a real, bona-fide, 100% genuine electric motor in it! We also talk about the intricacies of some of the less-sexy parts of an Electric Vehicle – the brake vacuum pump, the ceramic heater, the battery pack cutoff switch and the motor adaptor plate.

  • Odziz:

Excellent EV build series, keep up the good work!

  • DeLorean4:

I don’t know whether Gavin’s proud to have his toilet brush idea become a universal standard. I can imagine all EV conversion shops being equipped with a Gavin Brush.

  • cikgu75:

MMmmmmm. Im getting myself one of those “Gavin Brush”. Oh yeahhh…. ;P

  • cant7think7clearly:

    So that’s my legacy… A toilet brush?

    LOL

  • paulb4uk:

Good video i look forward to seeing the car progress.

  • AlamoCityCello:

Not to pee-pee on your parade, but where are you going to put the batteries? A laditudally motor, (ie BMW or some VWs), will allow batts over the motor. Given your space/weight, 12v flooded batteries are the way to go.
If your a rich man, do lithiums and a Zilla HV. If you’re like me, floodies are in your furture. Keep going brother!

  • makinnoizemedia:

Hey AlamoCityCello, I’ve explained pretty clearly in the ep3 exactly what I’m doing about batteries, and where I’m putting ‘em! Go have a look at ep 3….

  • coolrunningsEV:

    Hi Kearon
Congratulations on your ev mate. I have watched your videos and been to your website and read a lot there and I have decided to build one and I am looking at the capri like yourself. I would like to know what the final GVM will be and would it be legal for 2 people atleast driver and passenger.

  • artofwheels:

  • fenderstratguy:

    Interesting and Funny!

  • rtsoccerplayer:

hahaha “a manual girls can drive…that’s gonna hurt later…”

  • GOTTshua:

How come you didn’t make a make-shift pulley above the car (anchored beneath the garage joists) to help you lift that into place?

    Signed,
a girl who only knows standard-shift vehicles

  • zppz:

hmm. okay i am definitely gonna get a hoist to do mine

  • zppz:

a “whole bunch” of brake boosters? got any left?

  • makinnoizemedia:

Sorry zppz – sold em all the Les (he guy in eps 1 and 6).

  • mikeakaspike:

so do you know how much horsepower the motor that you picked up has? and what the maximum speed of the car is, now that you have it done?

  • mcclau71:

Interesante, pero de que potencia (hp) es el motor?

which is the engine power? Please

  • makinnoizemedia:

    It’s a 67kwh Netgain Impulse 9.

  • apache4541:

Good news you will get new Nanotech battery A123 systems more powerful than Lithium-ion Powered ! The Nanotech battery quick charged in 5 mins get full , you will get about 450 miles range

  • danieldiasmauro:

I just would like to know if this gearbox needs oil…?? Out of lub it should overheat, overatrict than, boom its over…or it does not overheat?

  • makinnoizemedia:

@ danieldiasmauro: Yes, it’s a standard gearbox, and as such, needs oil (or the synthetic equalivalent of!). As the electric motor I’m running is dsigned for this sort of weight, it’s not going to overstress or heat up the gearbox either.

  • particlesofenergy:

So is the motor only attached to the transmission by your custom plate? Or do you have to bolt it to the car itself too?

  • TheDigitalguyy:

should have got a transmission jack to put the motor in

  • allawayjared:

I have the warp9, how is the impulse different?

  • doyleaudio:

This is absolutely great. What a lot of fun this guy is. Thanks so much. I am inspired.
    Cheers
